POSITION GOAL: Promote high levels of visitor satisfaction through the management of maintenance operations, park facilities, infrastructure, natural areas and grounds of assigned location to the highest professional standards and according to Metroparks mission and operating principles.

COMPENSATION: $62,550 - $87,123

Employer and employee contribute to Public Employee Retirement System.

MINIMUM POSITION REQUIREMENTS:

Alternates to the following position requirements may be made as Metroparks finds appropriate and acceptable.

Education:  Bachelor’s degree in Public Administration, Business Management, Parks and Recreation services, Natural Resources, Grounds Management or related field, or equivalent work experience.  

Experience:  Moderate level of park outdoor operations experience including maintenance or construction experience.  Moderate level of supervisory experience.  Horticultural, arboricultural, and/or project management experience preferred.

•Must be 18 years of age and possess a valid driver’s license with acceptable driving record.

Working Conditions/Physical Requirements:

•Work schedule may include some weekends, holidays and evenings; work hours will vary based on departmental and organizational needs.  Position subject to 24-hour on call.

•Work location: as assigned.

•May require business use of personal vehicle

•Physical Requirements: Requires occasional lifting and carrying of up to 25 pounds; ability to walk and work outdoors for extended periods of time in all types of weather including extreme heat and cold.  Must pass fitness for duty testing and drug screening at time of hire.

REPORTS TO:  Regional Operations Manager

DIRECT REPORTS:  Park Technicians, Park Maintenance, Crew Leader, Horticulturalist and Seasonal employees as assigned.  

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

•Oversee maintenance of facilities, grounds, trails, equipment, fleet, roadways, parking lots, play equipment, and other developed infrastructure within assigned park district to the highest professional standards.

•Supervise maintenance and public services activities and outreach programming for assigned park district.

•Assign duties to staff; schedule shifts and project assignments; prioritize work; adjust staffing levels for the effective delivery of services; train staff members in their duties; coordinate work activities through CMMS work order system. 

•Ensure protection and management of natural areas.

•Coordinate maintenance activities and resolve problems.

•Confer and cooperate with other departments, partners and operations districts in order to ensure coordination of activities and maintain interagency communications.

•Record data and create reports pertaining to maintenance activities.

•Observe and monitor staff performance in order to ensure efficient and safe operations, achievement of goals and adherence to organizational policies and procedures.

•Stay current with technological advancements within the division and district including communications, data acquisition and dissemination; manage use of technology by staff.

•Maintain data on park district resources including facilities, fleet and equipment inventory.

•Support training and development of staff including general orientation, core training, on-the-job training and career development.

•Cooperate with planning department and safety officer to ensure effective risk management for park visitors, staff, and volunteers.

•Work with volunteer program staff to create volunteer opportunities and effectively use volunteer resources to accomplish projects and programs; coordinate operations of Volunteer Trail Patrol within assigned park district.

•Actively promote and participate in all district programs. Participate in strategic planning activities; carry out assigned initiatives to support Metroparks strategic plan and operating principles.

•Direct the work of volunteers and interns.

•Schedule and coordinate contract services.

•Coordinate park services activities with other departments for special events and programs.

•Create and present public information programs, in-service field training, and maintain interagency communications.

•Must obtain the following certifications within 1 year of employment and fulfill requalification and recertification requirements:

o First Aid/CPR/AED

o Pesticide Applicator’s license

o OSHA/PERRP 10-hour training

•Effectively supervise and direct the work of department staff utilizing performance management.

•Participate in budget activities including management/oversight of budget, purchasing and cost-effective use of resources.

•Handle special projects and programs at assigned work location such as paddle boat rentals, kayak rentals, firewood sales, rental properties, facility rentals.

•Ensure effective communication both within assigned park district, throughout the Operations Division and the Park District.

•Ensure effective handling of customer services issues.

•Other park district duties as assigned.

EQUIPMENT USED:  Computers, Microsoft products, audio-visual equipment, office equipment, cameras, GPS Systems, power tools, on-and-off-road park vehicles.  With training, may be required to operate maintenance and construction equipment including chain saws, tractors and heavy equipment.
