POSITION GOAL: Assist programming in providing positive, engaging and educational experiences for Metroparks Connections Campers. Promote a high level of community connection to natural parks and open spaces.

CLASSIFICATION:  Hourly/Seasonal

COMPENSATION:  $12.00/hr. Employer and employee contribute to Public Employees Retirement System.

MINIMUM POSITION REQUIREMENTS:

Alternates to the following position requirements may be made as Metroparks finds appropriate and acceptable. 

Education: 16 year of age or older.

Experience: No prior work experience required. Previous work or volunteer experience working with or supervising children and interest in working outdoors preferred. 

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

- Stand-up presentation and written communication skills.

- Ability to assist in leading high quality programs and varied activities with children and adults.

- Computer skills in current technology.

- Ability to work effectively and productively in a team environment.

Able to understand, communicate, and follow oral and/or written policies, procedures and instructions from supervisor and colleagues.

Ability to recognize and communicate safety and maintenance issue in a timely manner.

Able to use logical and creative thought processes to solve problems.

Willingness to support Metroparks mission, operating principles, goals and objectives.

Valid driver’s license is preferred.

Demonstrated interest in and commitment to nature and the environment.

- Ability to assist with archery, canoeing and fishing.

Working Conditions/Physical Requirements:

Work schedule:  Up to 40 hours per week

Length of employment varies from May through August based on need.

- Requires lifting and carrying up to 25 lb. without assistance; up to 90lb. with assistance will work mostly outdoors in most weather conditions; able to lead varied activities with children and adults.

Ability to successfully complete CPR/First Aid training.

Work location: Glass City Metropark.  Will travel to other parks as needed. 

REPORTS TO:  Camp and Enrichment Programs Coordinator

DIRECT REPORTS:  None

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES may include any of the following:

- Serve as camp a counselor for Metroparks Connections Camp summer program for youth age 5 to 14.

- Assist in leading high quality educational programming relating to the natural, historical, and cultural resources of Metroparks and the northwest Ohio region as directed by Metroparks staff.

- Be a positive role model when leading campers and volunteers

- Guide individual camper participation.

- Assist with daily maintenance of facilities and teaching areas, equipment and supplies. Includes sweeping and mopping, restroom and litter clean up.

- Under the direction of Metroparks staff, assist with the preparation and facilitation of high quality, age-appropriate, nature based camp and outdoor skills activities including archery, canoeing, fishing (such as baiting and removing fish from hooks), nature walks, games crafts and other engaging programs.

- Take photos of daily camp activities, upload and organize photos. 

- Help maintain a safe environment for campers and park visitors at all times.

- Attend trainings, meetings, and workshops to learn new skills and keep up to date on Metropark communication.

- Maintain proper work appearance.

- Use computer with common software applications to send and receive email communication.

- Other Park District duties as assigned.

EQUIPMENT USED:  Art and nature equipment and supplies, computers and general office equipment, cameras, general cleaning supplies, hand tools, canoes, fishing poles, archery equipment.
