Wide Area Mower Assistant      

POSITION GOAL: To provide a clean, safe, and natural park experience for visitors by performing lawn maintenance activities including: mowing, edging, blowing and trimming.

CLASSIFICATION:  Hourly - Seasonal

COMPENSATION:  $13.50 per hour.  Employer and employee contribute to Public Employees Retirement System. 

MINIMUM POSITION REQUIREMENTS:

Alternates to the following position requirements may be made as Metroparks finds appropriate and acceptable.

Education:       High School Diploma or equivalent. 

Experience:     Some landscape and/or lawn mowing experience.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

·        Must be 18 years of age and possess a valid driver’s license with acceptable driving record.

·        Knowledge of basic home and maintenance safety procedures.

·        Knowledge of basic home and yard maintenance activities and procedures.

·        Some knowledge of the proper operating procedures for home and garden equipment.

·        Ability to learn how to drive a truck and trailer.

·        Ability to communicate well with others.

·        Able to understand and follow oral and/or written policies, procedures and instructions.

·        Able to use logical and creative thought processes to solve problems.

·        Willingness to support Metroparks mission, operating principles, goals and objectives.

·        Ability to get along well with others and work as a part of a team.

·        Ability to perform a wide variety of duties and responsibilities with speed and accuracy under the pressure of deadlines.

·        Basic knowledge of operating computer equipment and utilizing e-mail communication preferred.

Working Conditions/Physical Requirements:

·        Work schedule:  Up to 40 hours per week; may require one weekend day per week, some evenings and holidays.

·        Term of employment varies from March through December based on need.

·        Requires regular lifting up to 40 lb. and occasional lifting up to 60 lb.; will work mostly outdoors in most weather conditions.

·        May require business use of personal vehicle.

·      Work locations:  Glass City, Pearson, Wildwood, Secor, Providence, Farnsworth, Side Cut, Oak Openings, Blue Creek or Swan Creek Metroparks. 

REPORTS TO:  Park Services Supervisor or Park Services Crew Leader

DIRECT REPORTS:  None

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Perform basic lawn maintenance including mowing, edging, blowing and trimming.
  • Perform various cleaning and maintenance duties including cleaning restrooms, picking up litter and trash removal.
  • Purchase materials with supervisor approval.
  • Safely drive park on-road and off-road vehicles with trailers between work assignments on park trails and roadways; exhibit proper regard for avoiding damage to vehicles and resources.
  • Operate equipment with supervision; exhibit proper care and maintenance of equipment.
  • Comply with all safety rules and regulations.
  • Guide new employees in similar types of positions on the performance of certain tasks by demonstration and providing information.
  • Keep supervisor or designee fully and accurately informed concerning work progress, present and potential work problems.
  • Suggest improvements for work processes and procedures.
  • Attend trainings, meetings, and workshops to learn new skills and keep up to date on Metropark communication.
  • Respond to customer questions, comments and suggestion in a courteous and timely manner.
  • Maintain proper work appearance.
  • Use MS Outlook to send and receive email communication
  • Other Park District duties as assigned. 

EQUIPMENT USED:  Mowers, service and utility vehicles, power and hand tools, safety equipment; on-road and off-road vehicles including large and small trucks with trailers, golf carts and ATVs.
